贝多芬诞辰250周年系列音乐会之一

导赏 这是一场古典与现代、北半球与南半球音乐的“和谐”大战,贝多芬《小提琴协奏曲》和皮亚佐拉《布宜诺斯艾利斯的四季》在一场音乐会的曲目单上出现,对于观众来讲无疑是一次 “观赏性”极佳的听觉盛宴;而对于演奏者来讲则在两首作品的技术表现极度分离的情况下, 还要考验他的思维、逻辑的颠倒性,站在任何一首作品的立场去演奏另一首作品都会有头朝下天地反转的感觉。演奏家如何乾坤大挪移,指挥家和乐团如何相得益彰都是这场音乐会的看点。

对于吕思清来讲,贝多芬《小提琴协奏曲》是看家的拿手戏自不待言,他的小提琴会如何跳起皮亚佐拉神出鬼没变化莫测的探戈舞步,格外值得人们的期待。当然,另一个值得期待的亮点是李映衡、蔡珂宜、朱凯源三位年轻独奏家与中国爱乐乐团的首次携手亮相。在2018年的梅纽因国际小提琴比赛上,两位华人小提琴家李映衡与蔡珂宜获得少年组并列冠军,而朱凯源不仅是六年前同一奖项的获得者,更在2018年成为帕格尼尼小提琴比赛有史以来最年轻的冠军得主,他们三人将携手吕思清一起演奏皮亚佐拉的“四季”,这是三位新科冠军与“老前辈”的对话,对于观众来说则是大饱耳福的良机。 (李澄,《音乐周报》记者)

吕思清作为当今最具影响力的杰出中国小提琴家,每年频繁的受邀与国内外知名乐团合作演出及举办独奏音乐会,并定期带领他于2011年与钢琴家孙颖迪,大提琴家秦立巍创办的“美杰中国三重奏”举行室内乐音乐会。他那美妙动听、激动人心的琴声早已遍布世界四十多个国家和地区的著名演出场所,如维也纳金色大厅、美国纽约林肯艺术中心、洛杉矶好来坞碗型剧场、渥太华国家艺术中心、蒙特利尔艺术广场、英国伦敦巴比肯中心、皇家歌剧院、威格莫尔音乐厅、法国巴黎香榭丽舍大剧院、凡尔赛宫路易十四歌剧院、俄罗斯莫斯科音乐大会堂、日本东京三得利音乐厅、澳大利亚墨尔本艺术中心、悉尼歌剧院、新加坡滨海艺术中心、阿布扎比酋长皇宫礼堂、中国国家大剧院等。

吕思清与世界顶尖指挥家和音乐家有过多次成功的合作,其中包括洛林•马泽尔、瓦列里•捷吉耶夫、莱昂纳德·斯拉特金、艾度•迪华特、弗拉基米尔•阿什肯纳齐、劳伦斯•福斯特、梵志登、奥斯莫•万斯卡、米歇尔·普拉松、波切利等。此外他还与众多中国杰出音乐家保持着密切的合作,如余隆、郎朗、吕嘉、汤沐海、绍恩,谭利华,吕绍嘉、简文彬、林昭亮、王羽佳、王健、张弦、张艺、李心草、杨洋、戴玉强,上海弦乐四重奏以及奥斯卡获奖者、作曲家、指挥家谭盾等。吕思清亦受邀于2011年在波兰举行的谭盾小提琴协奏曲《英雄》世界首演音乐会中担任独奏。

2019年,吕思清作为墨尔本交响乐团百年历史上首位华人驻团艺术家,奏响2019开幕音乐会。并且,吕思清将在海内外近30个城市进行“魔弓传奇Ⅱ——吕思清小提琴独奏音乐会”巡演。此外,吕思清亦受邀担任国家大剧院交响乐团2019乐季驻团艺术家;他亦受邀与众多乐团在全球范围内展开巡演,包括与国家大剧院交响乐团亮相阿联酋阿布扎比音乐节、与上海爱乐乐团参加曼谷国际舞蹈音乐节、与中国交响乐团合作在悉尼歌剧院演出、与青岛交响乐团赴南美洲展开其乐团历史上首次的拉美巡演。

吕思清经常受邀参加世界各地顶尖艺术节及音乐节的演出活动,并应邀担任北京国家大剧院“五月音乐节”艺术总监,耶胡迪·梅纽因国际青少年小提琴比赛及上海伊萨克斯特恩国际比赛评委。2016年秋,吕思清在中国深圳创办了首届“吕思清·深圳福田国际弦乐艺术周”并任艺术总监第二届艺术周已于2018年九月再次在深圳举办。

吕思清与包括飞利浦(Philips)、拿索斯(Naxos)、马可波罗(Marco Polo)及BIS在内的世界知名唱片公司合作出版过20多张个人专辑。他还曾录制过五版《梁祝》小提琴协奏曲,其发行量数以百万,并被喻为当今最佳版本。吕思清最新录制的唱片是与墨尔本交响乐团合作的“小提琴之美-吕思清协奏曲专辑”,曲目包括门德尔松、布鲁赫的小提琴协奏曲以及中国作曲家谭盾的小提琴协奏曲《戏韵》。这张唱片于2018年3月由澳大利亚最大的唱片公司ABC Classics在全球出版发行。 

吕思清以其杰出的艺术成就及广泛的社会影响力在全球获得过众多荣誉,其中包括美国国会众议院荣誉证书、美国新泽西州“杰出亚裔艺术成就奖”、美国加州参议院荣誉证书、多次获得美国加州众议院执委会荣誉证书、德国万宝龙卓越艺术大奖、《中国青年》杂志“影响21世纪中国的100个青年人物”之一、奥迪英杰汇文化大使等。美国加州Millbrae市还将2006年9月16日定为“吕思清日”。

吕思清1969年出生于中国青岛。他四岁开始学习小提琴,八岁被中央音乐学院附小破格录取,师从王振山教授,成为这所著名学府有史以来最为年轻的学生,11岁被世界著名小提琴家耶胡迪·梅纽因选到英国他创办的天才音乐学校学习。1984年回国继续深造。19岁赴纽约朱丽亚音乐学院深造,师从世界著名小提琴教育家德罗希·迪蕾女士及姜孝先生。

吕思清使用的是由澳大利亚华裔慈善家李大伟先生特别提供的意大利制琴大师斯特拉迪瓦里制作于1699年名为“克莉斯比小姐”的小提琴。

 

小提琴:李映衡

李映衡2017年10月出生于澳大利亚墨尔本。从5岁开始学习小提琴时,他便展现出了对音乐极大的兴趣和天赋。李映衡师从澳大利亚国立音乐学院著名小提琴家教育家罗宾.威尔逊博士 (Dr Robin Wilson)。

2018年,10岁的李映衡在日内瓦获得了梅纽因国际小提琴比赛 Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition 少年组联合第一名,引起了国际性的关注,他是该奖项历史上最小的获得者,此外他还获得了观众奖和作曲家奖。比赛中,他与日内瓦室内乐团及伦敦皇家爱乐乐团共同演奏。

李映衡9岁与澳大拉西亚交响乐团首次以独奏形式亮相,并于2018年8月10岁的时候以独奏家的身份,与维多利亚州交响乐团合作首次演奏了小提琴协奏曲(门德尔松E小调小提琴协奏曲)。2019年李映衡与墨尔本交响乐团在Sydney Myer Music Bowl 上首次合作。随后他与悉尼交响乐团在悉尼歌剧院,与澳大利亚勃兰登堡交响乐团在悉尼市政演奏厅和墨尔本演奏中心的演出都获得极大的好评。同时,李映衡还在切尔滕纳姆 (Cheltenham),哈罗盖特 (Harrogate)和高尔国际音乐节( Gower International Festivals)举办了英国首轮独奏音乐会巡演,此外,他还在以色列和挪威举办了个人独奏音乐会。未来,他将在汤斯维尔(Townsville)举行的澳大利亚室内乐音乐节(Australian Festival of Chamber Music)上演奏,并将与墨尔本交响乐团再次合作,以及在美国和欧洲演出。

2017年7月,李映衡在意大利举办的森帕音乐节国际比赛(Semper Music International Competition) 的小提琴少年组获得一等奖,并在该音乐节进行了多次独奏和室内乐表演。2017年6月,李映衡被选中参与 “美国国际钢琴提琴大赛” American Protégé 十周年纪念音乐会表演,奏响纽约卡内基音乐厅 Carnegie Hall in New York。2014年,他在中国“金色北京小提琴比赛”中获得一等奖。2013年,李映衡被选中参与了一支中国电视广告的拍摄。

李映衡使用的是一把罕见的3/4尺寸的小提琴。这把小提琴由多姆·尼科洛·阿玛蒂Dom Nicolo Amati 于1733年制作,并由波士顿Reuning & Son琴行给予使用。他使用的琴弓是罕见的19世纪由皮埃尔·西蒙Pierre Simon制作的一把3/4琴弓,由伦敦的弗洛里安·伦纳德小提琴公司Florian Leonard Fine Violins借出使用。此外,李映衡还喜欢阅读、游泳和踢足球。


小提琴:蔡珂宜

蔡珂宜,今年十二岁,是乐坛新进的小提琴手,于2018年获得了在瑞士日内瓦举办的梅纽因国际小提琴比赛少年组首奖。

珂宜四岁开始在新加坡南洋艺术学院(NAFA), 少儿天才音乐学校(SYT)里学习小提琴。启蒙班结束后,便一直跟随学校弦乐部主任,殷柯老师学习至今。

珂宜从七岁开始参加国内外的小提琴比赛。获奖主要包括,新加坡全国钢琴与小提琴比赛初级组第三名(2015)及首奖(2017),第四届泰国国际弦乐比赛初级组首奖(2015),第二十四届Andrea Postacchini 国际小提琴比赛,初级组首奖(2017),以及第二届珠海莫扎特国际青少年音乐周,初级组第三名(2017).

珂宜除了积极参加比赛以外,也非常热爱参与国内外音乐会的演出活动。她曾受邀参加国际小提琴艺术节,这包括了英国New Virtuosi Queenswood Mastercourse,美国Atlanta Festival Academy, 以及在新加坡举行的小提琴艺术节。珂宜演出所到过的国家包括了中国,泰国,英国,瑞士,沙特阿拉伯,美国 及德国。演出合作过的乐团包括,新加坡交响乐团,夏门爱乐乐团,萨尔茨堡独奏家室内乐团,AFA Festival Orchestra, 俄罗斯国家青少年 交响乐团,以及Kammerorchester Basel. 



小提琴:朱凯源

朱凯源三岁开始学习小提琴,现年十九岁的他已经参加了许多出色的音乐会演出,并多次荣获国际比赛大奖。他曾在伦敦皇家节日音乐厅、维也纳莫扎特音乐厅、中国国家表演艺术中心、莫斯科国际表演艺术中心、意大利博洛尼亚音乐厅、美国匹兹堡亨氏音乐厅和奥斯汀龙表演艺术中心等著名场所担任独奏演出。他与世界最顶尖管弦乐团之一的伦敦爱乐乐团首次亮相,就获得了国际著名音乐杂志 《The Strad》的高度好评。对他在萨拉萨蒂《卡门幻想曲》的表演,音乐评论家 Tim Homfray 写道:“朱凯源的表演非常出色,他展现出了令人震撼的技术和成熟,把萨拉萨蒂音乐中的高难度技巧轻而易举地表现出来,并给予恰如其分的戏剧性演绎”。 《Amati》杂志则对他在奥斯汀的独奏称赞道:“他显然继续在突飞猛进,通过这首作品展现出精湛技艺,并完全表达了曲子的魅力和成熟的戏剧风格”。2019 年在意大利演出柴可夫斯基小提琴协奏曲后,音乐评论家兼唱片制作人 Alberto Spano 的文章高度赞扬他的表演“精湛而成熟,闪耀而优雅, 他的技艺如此完美,声音令人难以置信的纯净, …… 他的独特风格赋予了这首小提琴协奏曲古典和现代的完美结合,以致整个市政剧院爆发出极为罕见的震耳欲聋的掌声”。 

2012 年,朱凯源获得在北京举行的梅纽因国际小提琴比赛少年组第一名,成为该项赛事 29 年来最年轻的冠军,同时,他还荣获最佳中国新作品演绎奖;2018 年,他再次荣获在意大利举行的第55 届帕格尼尼国际小提琴比赛金奖,并获得二个特别奖:最年轻的决赛选手奖和帕格尼尼随想曲最佳演奏奖。 

朱凯源在维也纳莫扎特音乐厅与维也纳室内乐团的首演非常成功,他表演了维瓦尔第《四季》小提琴协奏曲。他近期的演出包括与莫斯科 Virtuosi 管弦乐团,匹兹堡交响乐团,列宁格勒交响乐团,四川爱乐乐团等合作的小提琴协奏曲,以及伦敦,纽约,广州和意大利各地的独奏音乐会。他也应邀参加了世界各地的音乐节活动,包括最近参加的瑞士 Verbier 音乐节、德国 Moritzburg音乐节、和意大利 Paganini Genova 音乐节。作为中国林耀基音乐基金会的文化大使,朱凯源于2013 和 2016 年在冰岛 Harpa 国际音乐节担任特邀独奏嘉宾。他还多次成为英国 BBC 广播电台和美国国家公共广播电台的特邀嘉宾。朱凯源即将参加在俄罗斯、波兰、意大利和中国等一系列独奏音乐会。 

朱凯源现就读于纽约茱莉亚音乐学院,并获得最高荣誉全额奖学金 Kovner Fellowship,师从世界著名小提琴大师 Itzhak Perlman 和林㯤教授。他演奏的是一把由 Ryuji Ueno 基金会和 Rare Violins联合会提供给他长期使用的意大利安东尼奥·斯特拉迪瓦里小提琴 c1722“Lord Wandsworth”。 


指挥:余隆

余隆是活跃于国际乐坛的最杰出的中国指挥家,被纽约时报誉为“中国古典音乐届最具影响力的人物”,现任北京国际音乐节艺术委员会主席和中国爱乐乐团艺术总监,上海交响乐团和广州交响乐团音乐总监,上海夏季音乐节的联合总监,以及香港管弦乐团首席客席指挥。余隆创办了北京国际音乐节并于1998年至2018年间担任其艺术总监。

在2019/20乐季中,除了在中国的演出,余隆将以客座指挥英国皇家爱乐乐团、纽约爱乐乐团、伯尔尼交响乐团,荷兰广播爱乐乐团,阿德莱德交响乐团、奥克兰爱乐乐团、台湾爱乐乐团以及新加坡交响乐团等。2019年夏天,余隆与上海交响乐团的巡演之旅至美国和欧洲等地,包括了BBC逍遥音乐节、爱丁堡国际艺术节、拉维尼亚艺术节,卢塞恩音乐节等。

2018年6月,余隆与德意志留声机(以下称“DG”)签署独家录音合约,成为DG旗下签约的第一位中国指挥家。作为2018/19乐季德意志留声机120周年庆典的一部分,余隆于18年10月在北京的紫禁城太庙指挥了一场盛大的启动音乐会,同台艺术家包括阿依达•加里芙琳娜和丹尼尔•特里福诺夫,该音乐会随后发行了唱片。

2008年,余隆指挥中国爱乐乐团作为首支中国乐团在梵蒂冈城保罗六世礼堂演出,教宗本笃十六世观看演出,成为令全世界瞩目的中西方文化交流盛事。2014年余隆率领中国爱乐乐团在英国BBC逍遥音乐节上演出,该音乐会的电视转播在英国收视率过百万,余隆和中国爱乐也成为了首位中国指挥和中国乐团登上这一舞台。

为了推动中国交响乐的宏观发展,余隆联合了上海交响乐团、上海音乐学院和纽约爱乐创建了中国首个乐队学院。他的前瞻性愿景着眼于向中国正在成长中的古典乐观众介绍重要的西方作品,包括瓦格纳的指环王系列、马勒系列,还有理查德•施特劳斯、本杰明•布里顿及其他作曲家作品。2014年,纽约爱乐乐团任命余隆为乐团国际顾问委员会荣誉成员。这一由12名成员组成的委员会是一个倡导者和大使们与各国个人和机构联结的关系网,以培养纽约爱乐长期在全球范围内的影响力。

余隆与广州交响乐团的初次合作是1993年,并于2003年成为该团音乐总监。任职期间余隆曾率领乐团赴欧洲和埃及巡演,在巴黎香榭丽舍剧院、卢森堡音乐学院、阿姆斯特丹音乐厅和开罗歌剧院演出。

余隆1964年出生于上海的音乐世家,自幼随外祖父、著名作曲家丁善德教授学习音乐。后求学于上海音乐学院和德国柏林高等艺术大学。1992年,余隆担任中央歌剧院首席指挥。同年,他参与创办了中国的新年音乐会系列,并连续三年担任指挥。1993年起,余隆连续五年为香港市政局指挥歌剧演出。

鉴于余隆在推动当今世界古典音乐事业发展和促进国际间文化交流方面所做的突出贡献,法国政府特别授予余隆“法兰西文学艺术骑士勋章”;2002年,德国万宝龙文化基金会向余隆颁发了年度“万宝龙卓越艺术成就奖”; 2005年,意大利总理贝鲁斯科尼向余隆颁发了“共和国骑士勋章”; 2014年,他获得象征着法国最高荣誉典属体系的荣誉军团骑士勋章;2015年,余隆荣获“全国优秀文学艺术工作者”荣誉称号,并获得由美国大西洋理事会颁发的“全球公民”奖,以及由耶鲁大学音乐学院颁发的“桑福德奖章”;2016年,余隆当选美国艺术与科学院外籍荣誉院士,并于同年被授予德意志联邦共和国十字勋章;2018年,余隆被香港演艺学院授予荣誉博士学位。

Siqing Lu, violin

One of the most prominent and influential Chinese violinists today, Siqing Lu (pronounced See-Ching Lyu) performs regularly with major international and Chinese orchestras, in recitals and with the China Trio which he founded in 2011. As the first Asian violinist to win the prestigious International Paganini Violin Competition, Siqing has performed to acclaim in many of the world’s most prestigious concert halls worldwide, including the Musikverein in Vienna, Avery Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York City, Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Southam Hall at National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Maison Symphonique and Place des Arts in Montreal, Barbican Centre, Royal Opera House and Wigmore Hall in London, Theatre Des Champs Elysees and Louis XIV Opera House at Palace of Versailles in Paris, the Great Hall in Moscow, Suntory Hall,Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall in Tokyo, Hamer Hall at the Arts Centre in Melbourne, Sydney Opera House, the Esplanade in Singapore, Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing among others.

In 2019, as the first soloist in residence of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO), Siqing Lu would perform the Season Opening Gala of MSO. Besides, Siqing Lu would take a worldwide recital tour of more than thirty cities. In addition, Siqing was also invite as guest soloist on tour with the NCPA Orchestra at the Abu Dhabi Music Festival, the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra at the Bangkok International Dance and Music Festival, the China National Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House, as well as the Qingdao Symphony Orchestra on their historic first ever South America tour.

Siqing appears regularly at many of the top music festivals and prestigious music events around the world. He is the Artistic Director of the National Centre for the Performing Arts May Festival in Beijing, and is on the Jury of several prestigious international competitions such as the Menuhin Competition and the Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition. In fall of 2016, he founded the Siqing Lu Shenzhen Futian International String Festival, of which he is the Artistic Director.

Siqing Lu has released more than 20 CDs and video recordings for Philips, Naxos, Marco Polo, and BIS. His five recordings of the “Butterfly Lovers” violin concerto, the most famous work among the Chinese violin repertoire, has sold millions of copies worldwide. His interpretation of this piece is widely considered the best and he has thrilled audiences in more than twenty countries worldwide performing this violin concerto. His latest recording of the Mendelssohn and Bruch violin concertos as well as Tan Dun's violin concerto Out of Beijing Opera with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra was released worldwide by Australia’s ABC Classics to acclaim in March 2018.

Over the past decades, Siqing Lu has received numerous honors worldwide for his outstanding artistic achievement and social contributions, including Honorary Certificate from the United States House of Representatives, New Jersey Outstanding Achievement in Arts Award for Asian, California Senate Honorary Certificate, Honorary Certificate from the California Executive Committee of the House on multiple occasions, the Montblanc Outstanding Artist Award,  China Youth Magazine's “The 100 Most Influential Young People of the 21st Century in China” award. On September 16th of 2006, the City of Millbrae, California passed a legislation to have the date proclaimed as “Siqing Lu Day” in honor of Siqing’s achievements.

Siqing Lu was born in 1969 in Qingdao, China. He began to study violin at the age of four. As an eight-year-old child, he became the youngest student ever to be admitted by the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing as a special talented student and studied with Prof. Zhenshan Wang.  At the age of eleven, the late Lord Yehudi Menuhin chose Siqing to study at his school in London. In 1984, he returned to China for advanced studies at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Five years later, he went to the Juilliard School and studied with Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang.

Siqing Lu plays the “Miss Crespi” 1699 Stradivari violin, generously loaned to him by Chinese-Australian arts philanthropist Mr. David Li.

 

Christian Li, Violin

Christian Li, 12 years old, was born in Melbourne Australia and began violin at the age of 5 showing great interest and talent in music. He is studying under Dr. Robin Wilson, Head of Violin at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne. 

Christian came to international attention when in April 2018 he became the youngest-ever joint Junior 1st Prize-winner at the YehudiMenuhin International Violin Competition in Geneva, performing with the Geneva Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London. He also received the Audience Prize and the Composer Award. 

Christian made his solo orchestral debut at the age of 9 with the Australasian Orchestra and made his solo concerto debut at 10 in August 2018, performing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with Orchestra Victoria. In 2019 he made his debut with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestraat the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House and with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra at the Sydney City Recital Hall and the Melbourne Recital Centre, all to great acclaim. He also gave UK debut recitals at the Cheltenham, Harrogate and Gower International Festivals and performed in Tel Aviv and Norway. Future performances include with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville as well as performances in the US and Europe. 

In July 2017 Christian won First Prize in the violin category of the Young Artist Semper Music International Competition in Italy and gave many solo and chamber music performances as part of the Semper Music International Festival and Summer Academy. In June 2017 Christian was selected to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York in the American Protégé Showcase 10-year Anniversary concert. In 2014 he won First Prize in the "Golden Beijing" violin competition in China and in 2013 Christian was chosen for a TV commercial in China that features him playing the violin.

Christian plays on a rare 3/4 Size violin made by Dom Nicolo Amati in 1733, on generous loan from Reuning & Son Violins Boston, and a rare 19thC bow made by Pierre Simon on loan from Florian Leonard Fine Violins London. Christian also enjoys reading, swimming and soccer.


Chloe Chua, Violin

Young violinist Chloe Chua's meteoric rise on the classical music concert stage culminated in being awarded the joint 1st prize at the 2018 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists.

The 12-year-old from Singapore had also garnered the top prize at the 24th Andrea Postacchini Violin Competition, and the 3rd prize at the 2017 Zhuhai International Mozart Competition.  She has also been awarded prizes at Thailand International Strings Competition (Junior Category Grand Prize), Singapore National Piano and Violin Competition (1st Prize, Junior 2017, 3rd Prize Junior 2015).

She has been enrolled in the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts School of Young Talents (NAFA) since she was four, and is currently under the tutelage of Yin Ke, leader of their Strings programme.

Her stunning maturity and musicality has captured the hearts of audience around the world, and her performances have taken her to concerts hall across the U.K, Thailand, Italy, Germany, China, Saudi Arabia, USA and Singapore, and in festivals such as the New Virtuosi Queenswood Mastercourse,  Atlanta Festival Academy and the Singapore Violin Festival.

More recently, she has performed with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, China Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, AFA festival Orchestra, Salzburg Chamber Soloists, Russian National Youth Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Yuri Bashme and Kammerorchester Basel conducted by Umberto Benedetti Michelangeli.

She performs on a Vincenzo Postiglio, Napoli, 1884 on generous loan from Dr. Peter Chew.


Kevin Zhu, Violin

Nineteen-year-old Kevin Zhu has amassed an outstanding record of concert performances and competition wins since he began studying violin at age three. He has performed as a soloist at prestigious venues such as London's Royal Festival Hall, Mozart Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus, Bologna’s Teatro Comunale, China's National Centre for the Performing Arts, Moscow’s International Performing Arts Center, Pittsburgh’s Heinz Hall, and Austin's Long Center for the Performing Arts. His solo debut with London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, one of the world's greatest orchestras, received a glowing review from venerable music magazine The Strad. On Kevin's performance of Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy, critic Tim Homfray writes: “Zhu is just brilliant. He gave a performance of awesome technical command and maturity, in which every devilish demand put his way by Sarasate was dispatched with ease and a proper degree of dramatic flair”. Amati Magazine comments on Kevin’s solo performance in Austin: “He has clearly continued to flourish, whipping through the virtuosic demands of the piece and playing with a complete command of the sultry, mature drama”. On Kevin’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in Bologna, record producer and critic Alberto Spano writes: “Virtuous and mature, sparkling and elegant, with an absolute virtuosity, almost blinding in its incredible purity…covered by his own personality which gives the Tchaikovsky concerto new accents and almost classic phrasing in their Canovian perfection…to finally burst the Municipal Theater in a roar of quite rare consensus”. In April of 2018, Kevin won first prize in the 55th Paganini International Violin Competition in Genoa, Italy. He also received special prizes for being the youngest finalist and the best performance of a Paganini Caprice. In the 2012 Menuhin International Violin Competition in Beijing, Kevin was awarded first prize in the Junior Division, becoming the youngest-ever winner in the 29-year history of the competition. He also took home the Composer’s Prize for the best performance of a new Chinese work. Kevin had a very successful debut with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra at the Mozart Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus, performing Vivaldi's Four Seasons. His recent performances include concerto appearances with the Moscow Virtuosi Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and Sichuan Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as solo recitals in London, New York, Guangzhou, and across Italy. Kevin is regularly invited to participate in music festivals around the world, with recent appearances at the Verbier Festival, Moritzburg Festival, and Paganini Genova Festival. As a Culture Ambassador of the Lin Yao Ji Music Foundation of China, Kevin was a featured soloist at the Harpa International Music Academy in Iceland in 2013 and 2016. He has repeatedly been a featured artist on BBC Radio 3 and National Public Radio. Kevin’s upcoming engagements include concerto appearances in Russia and Poland, as well as a series of solo recitals in Italy, China, and the United States. Kevin is a proud recipient of a Kovner Fellowship at The Juilliard School, where he studies with Mr. Itzhak Perlman and Professor Li Lin. He previously trained at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with Li Lin and Ian Swensen. Kevin performs on the c1722 "Lord Wandsworth" Antonio Stradivari violin, which is on loan from the Ryuji Ueno Foundation and Rare Violins In Consortium, Artists and Benefactors Collaborative.


Long YU, conductor

Hailed as the “most powerful figure in China’s classical music scene” by The New York Times, the preeminent Chinese conductor Long Yu holds positions as the Music Director of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Artistic Director & Chief Conductor of the China Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Director of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra. He is also the Principal Guest Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Maestro Yu is the Founder of the Beijing Music Festival and was its Artistic Director from 1998 to 2018. He is the Co-Director of the MISA Summer Festival in Shanghai.

In the 2019/20 season, alongside his work in China, Maestro Yu makes guest appearances across the globe, including with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Bern Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia, Taiwan Philharmonic and Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Summer 2019 saw Maestro Yu lead the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra on a tour of the USA and Europe, with orchestral debuts at London’s BBC Proms, Edinburgh International Festival, Wolf Trap, and Ravinia Festival in addition to performances at the Lucerne Festival, Grafenegg Festival and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw.

In June 2018, Maestro Yu signed an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon, which began a global release and distribution partnership. As part of the Deutsche Grammophon’s 120th anniversary celebrations in 2018/19, Maestro Yu conducted a spectacular launch concert in October at the site of Beijing’s historic Imperial Ancestral Temple at the Forbidden City, alongside artists such as Aida Garifullina and Daniil Trifonov.

Maestro Yu has conducted a highly-acclaimed list of orchestras and opera houses throughout the world including the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Washington DC’s National Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Hamburg State Opera, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Tokyo Philharmonic and Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Maestro Yu continues to collaborate frequently with many of the world’s most celebrated soloists such as Alison Balsom, Sumi Jo, Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, Mischa Maisky, Maxim Vengerov and Yuja Wang.

In 2008, the China Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Long Yu became the first Chinese orchestra in history to perform at the Vatican in the Paul VI Auditorium. The concert was attended by Pope Benedict XVI and marked a giant step in bringing eastern and western cultures closer together. In 2014, Maestro Yu and the China Philharmonic became the first Chinese conductor and orchestra to play the fabled BBC Proms series with a televised performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The concert was viewed by millions of people across the United Kingdom.

Leading the development of orchestral landscape in China, Maestro Yu has created the nation’s first orchestral academy as a partnership between Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Conservatory, and the New York Philharmonic. His dynamic vision is focused on introducing China’s growing audiences to key Western repertoire including Wagner’s Ring Cycle, Mahler Cycle, as well as works of Richard Strauss, Benjamin Britten, and many others. In 2014, the New York Philharmonic named Maestro Yu an honorary member of their International Advisory Board. The 12-member Board serves as a network of advocates and ambassadors connecting with individuals and institutions in their home countries to cultivate the Philharmonic’s long-term reach and influence worldwide.

Maestro Yu made his debut with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra in 1993 and in 2003 became Music Director of the orchestra. During his time as Music Director, Maestro Yu has embarked on European and Egyptian tours with the orchestra, performing at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Conservatoire de Luxembourg, Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Cairo Opera House.

Born in 1964 into a musical family in Shanghai, Maestro Yu received his early musical education from his grandfather Ding Shande, a composer of great renown, and went on to study at the Shanghai Conservatory and the Hochschule der Kunst in Berlin. In 1992, he was appointed Principal Conductor of the Central Opera Theatre in Beijing and served as its conductor for three consecutive years. He created opera productions for The Urban Council of Hong Kong for five successive years.

Maestro Yu is a Chevalier dans L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the recipient of the 2002 Arts Patronage Award of the Montblanc Cultural Foundation. In 2005, the Italian government honored Maestro Yu with the title of L’onorificenza di commendatore. He was awarded France's highest honor of merit by joining la Légion d’Honneur in 2014. The following year, Maestro Yu was awarded the prestigious Global Citizen Award from the Atlantic Council and the Samuel Simons Sanford Award from Yale’s School of Music in America. Most recently, he was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2018, Long Yu was conferred an Honorary Doctorate from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Long Yu is currently Vice President of the Chinese Musicians Association.
